Robert Melchioris, LMT MLST CKTP offers professional massage therapy services in and around northeast Ohio.
He is a graduate of the National Institute of Massotherapy and has been licensed by the State Medical Board of Ohio since 2000. He is also a professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). As owner of North Coast Massage & Bodywork, LLC, he works as an independent contractor.
In addition to being able to perform relaxation sessions, Robert has completed specialized therapeutic training in several different modalities including Sports Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Ortho-Bionomy, LaStone Therapy, Stone Medicine, Canine Massage, Touch Pro Chair Massage, Kinesio Taping, MAT Jumpstart, and more.
Healing Hands, Healing Hearts
As the Logistics Director and a Team Leader of the Ohio Massage Disaster Response Team, Robert was deployed to Ground Zero in New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was honored and humbled to be able to provide massage therapy to the emergency workers, as well as extend his services to a community outreach program. As part of the relief effort at St. Paul's Chapel, he was there to serve the firefighters, police officers, port authority workers, and others with healing touch, empathetic support and physical comfort.
His commitment to the many hours of nurturing care for the men and women who faced our nation's biggest challenge was a life-changing experience that will not be forgotten. He went on to complete specialized training in Critical Incident Stress Management in the areas of group and peer support to further assist his team with mental healing of his team at future deployments. He also responded to disasters in Ohio, including Van Wert after deadly tornado destruction, and to local Red Cross chapters after flooding incidents.
Thriving Sports Massage Practice
His extensive training in sports massage has created exciting opportunities for him to work with many professional, world-class athletes. Through a comprehensive selection process, he was chosen from hundreds of applicants to be an elite member of the Winter Sports Massage Team at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, UT. This prestigious team was ultimately comprised of 258 massage therapists from 39 states and 12 different countries. He was appreciative to offer his services directly to the athletes in the Olympic Village as well as to international staff from around the world in the Main Media Center. These Olympic Games were the culmination of 2,399 athletes gathering from 77 countries to compete in 78 events.
For over a decade, he had worked as a sports massage therapist and core staff member of the official event medical provider for the action sports athletes at the Gravity Games and Dew Tour. He traveled with the medical team to provide rehabilitative massage and bodywork at the extreme sports events in several states across the country. Skateboarders, BMX riders, FMX riders, snowboarders, and skiers have all benefited from his work. During his tenure, he also served as Director of Athlete Medical and Rehabilitation at the Dew Tour. This was the first time in the organization's history that a massage therapist became an integral and consistent core member holding such a high leadership position.
After a meticulous screening process, Robert was selected to work with the Cleveland Browns during their 2010 summer training camp. He was eager to offer sports massage to the NFL football players as part of their recovery program.
In 2012, he was privileged to work with Cirque du Soleil's traveling production of Dralion. He was invited to work with Cirque again in 2019 for the arena tour of Corteo. His specialized skills allowed him to provide therapeutic treatments to the amazing artists of these spectacular creations.
Cleveland welcomed athletes from around the world in 2014 to compete in GG9. An estimated 10,000 athletes from more than 60 nations participated in 37 sports and cultural events. Robert was on deck at the swimming venue offering event sports massage to the competing athletes.
Providing event sports massage at the US Masters Swimming National Championship in 2015 was another exciting highlight. 963 swimmers from around the country gathered to compete in these finals at SPIRE Institute, a state of the art athletic complex serving as an official USOC Olympic Training Site and an official FINA Swimming Training Site. So many talented swimmers benefited from his focused approach to help them perform at their best.
Specialty Certificate in Sports Massage
Striving for excellence, Robert earned his credentials in the Sports Massage Specialty Certificate Program. This national certification was based on a rigorous and comprehensive series of courses developed by top educators and sports science experts to meet the high standards set forth in partnership with NCBTMB and AMTA.
Community involvement is important to Robert. Sponsoring local athletic events allows him to enhance the performance of the competitors as well as creating awareness of how massage and bodywork aids those with active lifestyles.
In 2015, 2016 and 2017, North Coast Massage & Bodywork was an official sponsor of the NPC Northcoast Championships. With over 500 competitors and thousands of spectators, this event has featured men's bodybuilding, men's and women's physique, figure, bikini, arm wrestling, 5K run and fitness model search. The bodybuilding show is a NPC national qualifier and receives national and international magazine coverage.
He also supported Reindeer Games III, IV and V, presented by CrossFit Saol. Hundreds of CrossFit competitors from around the area gave it their all in this 2-day event, consisting of 6 person teams in 2 different divisions tackling tough workouts. In 2016, 270 competitors battled for the podium. He was busy at the venue offering his talents to aid them in achieving their best.
In 2018, he eagerly supported and sponsored Rescue4PTSD. Diana Woolf's mission was to raise $25,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) to support Life Safety Initiative #13 for Psychological Support. She hopes to help firefighters recognize symptoms and access resources to manage job-related PTSD. Diana was the first female to race an Ironman triathlon in full turnout gear to raise aid for colleagues with PTSD!
Acknowledged as an accomplished professional in the massage therapy industry, Robert was contacted by the Editor in Chief of MASSAGE Magazine to submit an article for publication on the topic of sponsoring events to increase exposure of massage and one's practice. He was happy to share his expertise and personal perspective on the subject. The article "Promote Your Practice With Event Sponsorship" was published in the May 2017 issue.
Accomplished in Stone Massage
As a certified Master LaStone Therapist (MLST), Robert also offers a unique experience using hot and cold stones. LaStone Therapy is internationally recognized as being at the forefront of stone massage. He was fortunate to have learned advanced principles of geo-thermal-energy directly from Mary Nelson, the founder of LaStone Therapy. As a result of his dedication and extensive training, Robert excelled to become the first and only certified Master LaStone Therapist in the state of Ohio, and one of four in the United States!
Expanding his knowledge of using stones in bodywork, Robert studied Stone Medicine from Jenny Ray. She is a Native American Indian Shaman of the Santee Dakota Sioux nation. His commitment and passion to the work lead to him being selected by Jenny to study with her further to become a Certified Stone Medicine Instructor (CSMI). For years, he taught eight different continuing education courses offered through Stone Medicine, LLC.
Recognizing the importance of representing his profession with integrity, Robert is part of ATMA's mentoring program. He serves as a mentor to provide guidance and expertise to colleagues seeking personal and career development in the massage therapy industry.
Massage Therapy Hall of Fame Inductee
It is due to his devotion as an educator to protect the ancient traditions of Stone Medicine, as well as serving wellness to the human race through his private practice and his extensive volunteer efforts that Robert was inducted into the distinguished 2017 class of the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame. Established in 2006, the Hall of Fame honors the leaders and pioneers whose work and dedication have furthered the profession of massage therapy. He joins the few esteemed people worldwide to have been chosen and awarded with this outstanding recognition. Consideration as a recipient by this renowned organization is truly an exceptional honor that is greatly appreciated. The official induction ceremony takes place annually at the World Massage Festival.
